OpenVZ VPS: Great for Speed, relatively cheaper, because of shared resources like CPU with other instances, But not good where full control is required, like OpenVPN. However, some OpenVZ VPS providers offer VPS with Tun/Tap for VPN.
KVM VPS: This one is full virtualization, i.e. the virtual CPU and other resources are dedicated to the VPS Instance. All kind of tools/web applications can be run on it, like OpenVPN, Docker etc, provided there is enough Memory available.
VPS with SSD are great for Web Hosting and other web application stuffs which require fast read-write.
Storage VPS, due to their Low Disk IO are good for Backups and if allowed, SeedBoxes. However, the storage VPS Plans must be reviewed (previous reported benchmarks, Reddit/lowendtalk) before making the purchase.
Never buy a Plan, with Limited CPU Usage, or Bandwidth, which if exceeded you are charged more, e.g. Amazon AWS Services.
Some Interesting Providers after reviewing all of the above, alongwith Amazon AWS Services, which lie within the cost-effective/cheap category are ScaleWay and VirMach.
Update: VIRMACH Does not allow Torrenting of any kind due to their Disk IO rate limiting.
